My Complete Trip to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra — A Guide You’ll Actually Need
By a devotee who walked every step and loved every moment
I can still clearly recall the morning I made the decision to visit Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. Something inside of me said, “It’s time.” It was a chilly December night. Everyone who had visited Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra returned with tears in their eyes and a smile on their faces, according to the many stories I had heard from my parents, relatives, and neighbors. I also desired that feeling. And believe me, it was everything I had dreamed of and more when I eventually went.
This site gives as a complete travel guide for everyone wishing to visit Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, not just my personal experience. I will tell you everything — how to reach, where to stay, what to eat, how to do the yatra, what to carry, and what mistakes to avoid. So sit down, read slowly, and start planning your own trip to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra.
Where is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra?
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra is located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Katra is the base camp town from where the yatra (pilgrimage) to the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi begins. The shrine itself is situated at an altitude of about 5,200 feet above sea level in the Trikuta Mountains.
Katra is a small but very lively town that exists purely because of the pilgrimage. Every shop, every hotel, every restaurant in Katra exists to serve the lakhs of devotees who come to visit Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra every year.
How I Reached Katra — All Options Explained
When I planned my trip, I researched all the ways to reach Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. Here is what I found:
By Train
The nearest railway station is Katra Railway Station, which is now directly connected to many cities after the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project. Before that, Jammu Tawi Railway Station (about 50 km from Katra) was the main option. Trains like the Vande Bharat Express now run directly to Katra from Delhi. I travelled by train and it was comfortable and affordable.
By Air
The nearest airport is Jammu Airport (Satwari Airport). From Jammu, you can take a taxi or bus to Katra, which takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. Flights are available from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and other major cities.
By Road
Many people travel by road to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. Buses from Jammu, Delhi, and nearby cities are available. Private taxis are also a comfortable option. The road journey from Jammu to Katra is beautiful — mountains on one side, river on the other.
Registering for the Yatra — MUST Do This First
One of the most important things I want to tell you — you cannot start the yatra without a Yatra Parchi (registration slip). This is a must. You can register:
- Online at the official Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website (www.maavaishnodevi.org)
- Offline at counters in Katra town and railway stations
When I reached Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, I had already registered online. It saved a lot of time. The Yatra Parchi has a QR code that is scanned at multiple checkpoints during the trek. Without it, no one is allowed to proceed.
Registration is free of cost. Do it as early as possible because slots can fill up, especially during peak seasons like Navratri.
Where to Stay in Katra
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra has accommodation for every budget. I stayed at a mid-range hotel near the bus stand, and it was clean and comfortable.
Budget hotels — available from ₹500 to ₹1,000 per night. Basic rooms but very close to the starting point of yatra.
Mid-range hotels — ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 per night. Good rooms, hot water, food available.
Luxury hotels — ₹3,000 and above. Some hotels offer beautiful views of the mountains.
Dharamshalas and Shrine Board Bhavans — The Shrine Board runs its own accommodations which are affordable and well-maintained. I highly recommend booking Shrine Board accommodation in advance, especially during Navratri.
Pro Tip: Book your hotel before you arrive at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, especially if you’re visiting during peak season. Hotels fill up very fast.
The Yatra Route — Step by Step

This is the heart of the trip. The trek from Katra to the holy cave and back is approximately 48 km total (round trip). There are different routes available now, but let me explain the most common one.
Beginning Point: Katra → Ban Ganga
The Katra Darshani Darwaza is where the yatra begins. From here, pilgrims trek to Ban Ganga, which is roughly two kilometers away from Katra. Legend has it that water began to flow from the ground when Mata Vaishno Devi fired an arrow here. Before continuing, many pilgrims take a dip here. The water was cool and refreshing when I touched it.
Charan Paduka → Ban Ganga
The trail travels a further 1.5 km upward from Ban Ganga to Charan Paduka. It is thought that Mata Vaishno Devi rested her feet here. The footsteps are visible cut into a rock. A lot of pilgrims pause here to offer prayers.
Charan Paduka → Adhkuwari
From Charan Paduka, the trail goes to Adhkuwari, also known as Garbha Joon. This is about 6.5 km from Katra. The cave here is very significant — Mata Vaishno Devi is believed to have meditated here for 9 months. There is a small cave that you can enter and crawl through. It is a spiritual experience I will never forget.
At Adhkuwari, there is a Shrine Board Bhavan where pilgrims can rest, eat, and even stay for the night. I rested here for about 1 hour, had some food, and then moved ahead.
Adhkuwari → Sanjhi Chhat → Bhairo Ghati
From Adhkuwari, the trail continues uphill towards the main shrine. The walk is tough here but the views of the mountains are absolutely breathtaking. At Sanjhi Chhat, there is a helipad where helicopter services are available for those who cannot walk.
Bhairo Ghati → Holy Cave (Main Shrine)
The last stretch from Bhairo Ghati to the Holy Cave is steep but the excitement and devotion keep you going. When I finally saw the entrance of the holy cave, I got emotional. The sound of “Jai Mata Di” all around me gave me goosebumps.
The actual darshan inside the cave takes a few minutes but the feeling lasts a lifetime. The three Pindis (natural rock formations) representing the three forms of Mata — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Saraswati — are visible inside the cave. No idol, just natural rocks. That is what makes Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra unique.
After Darshan — Bhairo Mandir
After the main cave darshan, DO NOT leave directly. The yatra is considered incomplete without visiting the Bhairo Mandir, which is about 2.5 km uphill from the cave. Bhairo Nath was a demon who chased Mata Vaishno Devi, and she defeated him here. He asked for forgiveness and was given a place near her shrine. Visiting Bhairo Mandir is essential.
Route Options — Old Route vs New Route (Tarakote Marg)
After my visit to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, I came to know that the Shrine Board has added a new route called Tarakote Marg. This new route is:
- About 2 km shorter than the old route
- Better maintained with broader paths
- Has more facilities like benches and lighting
- Less crowded on regular days
The old route via Adhkuwari is the traditional route and has more spiritual significance. Many devotees prefer this route because of the Adhkuwari cave experience.
You can go by one route and return by another — which is exactly what I did. Went via old route, returned via Tarakote Marg. Both are beautiful.
Helicopter Service — For Those Who Cannot Trek
If you are elderly, sick, or have young children, there is a helicopter service available from Katra to Sanjhi Chhat, very close to the main shrine. This covers most of the difficult trek.
The helicopter booking is done online at the official Shrine Board website. Prices are around ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 per person one way. Book in advance because this fills up very fast, especially during Navratri.
I chose to walk the full route because I wanted the complete experience. But I would recommend the helicopter to anyone who genuinely cannot manage the trek.
What to Carry for the Yatra
This is very important. Packing right can make your yatra comfortable or miserable. Here is what I carried when I went to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra:
Clothing: Warm clothes (even in summer, nights and early mornings are cold at higher altitude), comfortable trekking shoes or sneakers, extra socks, a light raincoat or poncho.
Food and Water: Carry dry snacks like biscuits, dry fruits, energy bars. You can buy food along the route but it is more expensive. Carry at least 1 litre of water. Avoid cold water during the trek — always have warm or room temperature water.
Medical Kit: Basic medicines — paracetamol, ORS sachets, band-aids, antacid, any personal medicines you take. Altitude sickness tablets if you are sensitive.
Documents: Yatra Parchi (most important!), ID proof, hotel booking confirmation.
Others: Power bank (network and phone usage drains battery), small torch or phone torch, a small lock for your bag.
What NOT to carry: Leather items are not allowed inside the main cave area (belt, wallet, shoes). Keep plastic bags separate — you will need to deposit your shoes before entering the cave area.
Best Time to Visit Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra can be visited throughout the year, but here is a season-by-season breakdown:
March to June (Summer): This is one of the best times. Weather is pleasant, not too hot, not too cold. Crowds are moderate. Perfect for first-time visitors.
July to September (Monsoon): Trek can be slippery and there are chances of landslides. Not the ideal time. If you must go, check weather forecasts and be extra careful.
October to November (Navratri Season): This is the most popular time. Lakhs of pilgrims come to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra during Navratri. The atmosphere is electric with devotion. BUT — it is extremely crowded. Hotels are full, waiting time for darshan can be 6-10 hours. Book everything well in advance.
December to February (Winter): Cold and sometimes snowy, but very peaceful. Fewer crowds. The trek can be challenging due to cold but the experience is serene.
I went in January and it was magical — cold, peaceful, and deeply spiritual. The mountain fog added to the mystical feeling.
Food in Katra — What to Eat
Katra has hundreds of small dhabas and restaurants. Since this is a holy town, alcohol and non-vegetarian food are banned in Katra. All food available is pure vegetarian. Some must-try items:
Rajma Chawal — very famous here. Hot, spicy, filling. Perfect before a trek.
Poori Bhaji — a classic and available everywhere. Cheap and delicious.
Chai and Pakoras — every few hundred metres on the trek route, small stalls sell hot tea and snacks. In cold weather, this is heaven.
Prasad — after darshan, collect the official prasad from the Shrine Board counter. It includes dry fruits and other items.
Budget Estimate for the Trip
Here is a rough budget I calculated for my trip to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (solo traveller, 3 days 2 nights):
| Item | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|
| Train (Delhi to Katra, 2nd AC) | ₹800 – ₹1,500 |
| Hotel (2 nights, mid range) | ₹2,000 – ₹3,000 |
| Food (3 days) | ₹600 – ₹1,000 |
| Local transport in Katra | ₹200 – ₹400 |
| Offerings at shrine | As per wish |
| Total (approx.) | ₹3,600 – ₹5,900 |
If travelling in a group, costs come down further. The yatra itself is free — registration is free, darshan is free. This is the beauty of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra — Mata never charges anything.
Important Tips and Mistakes to Avoid
Having done the yatra myself and talked to many other pilgrims at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, here are the most important tips:
Start early. Begin your trek by 3-4 AM from Katra if possible. You will beat the crowds and reach the cave in cooler temperatures. Darshan in the early morning is very peaceful.
Wear comfortable shoes. Many people make the mistake of wearing new shoes or sandals. The trek is long and rocky. Please wear broken-in, comfortable footwear.
Do not litter. The mountains around Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra are sacred and beautiful. Keep the environment clean. The Shrine Board works very hard to maintain cleanliness.
Do not carry alcohol or non-veg food. It is not allowed and strictly checked at entry points.
Respect the queue. During peak times, there are long queues for darshan. Do not try to push or jump the queue. The Shrine Board manages this strictly.
Keep your Yatra Parchi safe. It is scanned at multiple points. If you lose it, you will face problems.
Hire a pony or palki only from official counters. Do not hire from random people on the street. Stick to official services.
Carry cash. ATMs are available in Katra but not on the trek route. Always carry enough cash before starting.
My Personal Moment at the Cave
When I finally stood in front of the Pindis inside the holy cave at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, I had just one feeling — gratitude. I did not ask for anything. I just thanked Mata for everything I have. The cold air inside the cave, the chanting of the priests, the sound of bells, the sight of other devotees crying with joy — it was all so powerful.
I cried too. And I am not ashamed of it.
That moment made me understand why millions of people travel every year to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. It is not just a religious trip. It is a journey inward. The 24 km trek teaches you patience, the mountains teach you humility, and the cave teaches you that some things are beyond explanation.
Final Thoughts — Should You Go?
Yes. A hundred times yes. Whether you are deeply religious or just spiritually curious, whether you are young or old, whether you are going alone or with family — Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra is a journey that will change something inside you.
Plan it properly. Follow the tips in this guide. Register in advance. Wear good shoes. Start early. And when you finally reach the cave and see the Pindis — forget everything else and just feel that moment.
