I had no idea what I was getting into when I first made travel plans to Sikkim. I assumed it would be just another trip to a hill station, where I would see some mountains, have some tea, and then return home. However, I realized this place was quite different as soon as my taxi crossed the border at Rangpo and I saw those mist-covered green hills. Sikkim is more than just a travel destination. It’s an emotion that lingers long after you depart.
I’ve now been to Sikkim three times, and each time I’ve learned something new. There is no chemical farming in this state, which is the only one in India that is entirely organic. The roads are unexpectedly decent, the people are really kind, and the air is clean.

Places to Visit in Gangtok and East Sikkim
Gangtok is the capital city of Sikkim and most travellers start their journey here. I did too. It is a lively town sitting at around 5,500 feet above sea level, and on a clear morning, you can see the mighty Kanchenjunga peak from certain viewpoints. That sight alone is worth the trip.
MG Marg
MG Marg is the beating heart of Gangtok and one of the most fun places to visit in Sikkim for first-timers. It is a pedestrian-only street lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants. My first evening in Gangtok, I just walked up and down MG Marg eating momos and clicking photos. It gives you a great feel of the local culture and lifestyle.
Rumtek Monastery
About 24 km from Gangtok, Rumtek Monastery is one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the entire world. I visited it on a quiet weekday morning and it was peaceful beyond words. The monastery is over 400 years old and houses very rare religious items. The view of the Gangtok valley from the monastery courtyard is absolutely stunning.
Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake)
This is probably the most famous of all places to visit in Sikkim near Gangtok. Tsomgo Lake sits at 12,400 feet and is a glacial lake, which means the water comes from melting snow. When I visited in winter, the whole lake was frozen and looked like a giant mirror of ice. In summer, it turns a deep blue-green colour. You need a permit to visit Tsomgo, but it is arranged very easily through your hotel or a local travel agent. This is a must-see among all the places to visit in Sikkim.
Baba Mandir
Just 8 km from Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir is a temple dedicated to Harbhajan Singh, a soldier of the Indian Army. The local army personnel and civilians both hold this temple in very high regard. I am not a very religious person but something about this place made me sit quietly for a long time and just think.
Nathula Pass
If your permit allows it, Nathula Pass at 14,140 feet is one of those places to visit in Sikkim that you will never forget for the rest of your life. It sits right on the India-China border. When I stood there and looked at the Chinese checkpost on the other side, it felt absolutely surreal. The pass is open only on certain days and the weather can be very harsh, so always dress in many layers.
Hanuman Tok and Ganesh Tok
These two temples sit on hilltops above Gangtok and offer panoramic views of the city and the mountains. Hanuman Tok in particular is a popular spot for sunrise viewing. Local devotees walk up early in the morning while tourists come for the views. These are simple but lovely places to visit in East Sikkim without needing any permits at all.
Places to Visit in North Sikkim
North Sikkim is my personal favourite part of this state. It is remote, raw, and wildly beautiful. Not many tourists make it here because it requires special permits and the mountain roads can be quite challenging. But if you want the real Sikkim experience, you must come to the north. The places to visit in North Sikkim are unlike anything else in India.
Gurudongmar Lake
Gurudongmar Lake at 17,800 feet is one of the highest lakes in the world and one of the most sacred places to visit in Sikkim. Getting there involves a very long drive through winding mountain roads, and the altitude can hit you quite hard if you are not properly acclimatised. But when you finally see that massive, still, crystal-clear lake with snow-capped peaks all around — there are no words. I literally had tears in my eyes.
The lake is considered holy by both Buddhists and Sikhs. Carry very warm clothes, enough water, and some dry snacks. The oxygen level at this altitude is very low and even simple walking feels tiring.
Lachen Village
Lachen is a small and charming village at around 8,900 feet and it serves as the base camp for trips to Gurudongmar Lake. I stayed here for a night and the experience was absolutely wonderful. The village has a very traditional feel — wooden houses, yaks grazing outside, and the gentle sound of a river running through the valley. If you are looking for offbeat places to visit in Sikkim, Lachen should be right at the top of your list.
Yumthang Valley, Lachung
Lachung is another beautiful village in North Sikkim, and from here you can visit the famous Yumthang Valley — also called the Valley of Flowers of Sikkim. During spring, the entire valley is covered in rhododendron flowers in every shade of red, pink, and purple. I visited in April and I had never seen anything quite like it in my life. Yumthang is easily one of the most beautiful and scenic places to visit in Sikkim for nature lovers.
Zero Point (Yumesamdong)
From Lachung, you can also drive up to Zero Point at around 15,300 feet. This is where the motorable road ends and the snowfields begin. When I was there, everything around me was just pure white. No trees, no birds, just endless snow and a deep, beautiful silence. It felt like being on another planet. Zero Point is genuinely one of the most dramatic and unforgettable places to visit in Sikkim.
Places to Visit in West Sikkim
West Sikkim is quieter than Gangtok but far richer in culture and natural beauty. I honestly found this part of Sikkim to be the most underrated. The places to visit in West Sikkim range from mountain viewpoints and sacred lakes to ancient ruins and thrilling bridges.
Pelling
Pelling is a small and very peaceful town that offers some of the clearest views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range. On a clear morning during my stay, I woke up at 5 AM, stepped onto my hotel balcony, and watched the sunrise slowly paint the peak in shades of gold and orange. It was one of the most beautiful mornings of my entire life. Pelling is one of those places to visit in Sikkim where you just want to sit quietly and do absolutely nothing.
Khecheopalri Lake
Known locally as the Wish-Fulfilling Lake, Khecheopalri Lake is a sacred site deep in the forest. Local legend says that birds remove every fallen leaf from the lake’s surface, keeping it always clean. When I visited, the lake did look impossibly clean and still. It is a quiet and spiritual place — very different from the busy tourist spots in Gangtok. This is among the most peaceful places to visit in Sikkim.
Rabdentse Ruins
Rabdentse was once the capital of the old Kingdom of Sikkim. Today it is in ruins, but the site is hauntingly beautiful. I walked through the stone structures with a light jungle on one side and a deep valley dropping away on the other side. History lovers will find this one of the most fascinating places to visit in West Sikkim.
Singshore Bridge
Singshore Bridge is Asia’s second-highest suspension bridge and it is right here in West Sikkim. I am slightly scared of heights, so crossing it was both terrifying and absolutely thrilling at the same time. The view of the deep gorge far below is breathtaking. If you enjoy a little adventure, definitely add Singshore to your list of places to visit in Sikkim.
Yuksom
Yuksom is the historic first capital of Sikkim and it has a quiet, ancient charm about it. It is also the starting point for the famous Goechala Trek, which takes trekkers very close to the Kanchenjunga base camp. I spent an afternoon walking around Yuksom’s old coronation site and its small monasteries. For trekkers and history lovers, this is a must-visit place in West Sikkim.
Places to Visit in South Sikkim
South Sikkim often gets skipped by tourists who run out of time, but I think it truly deserves more attention. It is green, fertile, and home to some really lovely temples, gardens, and viewpoints. The places to visit in South Sikkim are perfect for travellers who like culture and calm.
Namchi
Namchi is the main town of South Sikkim and it sits at around 5,500 feet. The town is known for two massive statues — one of Lord Shiva at Solophok Hill and one of Guru Padmasambhava at Samdruptse. Both are visible from many kilometres away. The Char Dham replica complex here is also very impressive and well maintained. Namchi is one of the most spiritual and interesting places to visit in South Sikkim.
Ravangla (Rabongla)
Ravangla is a peaceful hill town that a lot of travellers overlook completely. I stopped here on my way from Gangtok to Pelling and I am so glad I did. The Buddha Park in Ravangla has a massive and beautifully made statue of Buddha with the Kanchenjunga range visible in the background on clear days. It was incredibly serene and calm there. Ravangla is one of the most underrated places to visit in Sikkim for anyone looking for peace and good mountain views.
Temi Tea Garden
Temi is the only tea garden in Sikkim and the tea produced here is famous all over the world. I walked through the neat rows of tea plants in the early morning mist and had a fresh cup of Temi tea right there on the estate. If you enjoy nature and slow, quiet mornings, the Temi Tea Garden is a truly lovely place to visit in South Sikkim.
Borong Hot Springs
After all that trekking and sightseeing, there is nothing better than a dip in natural hot springs. The Borong hot springs in South Sikkim are exactly that — a simple, natural, and very relaxing spot surrounded by lush green hills. Not many people know about this, which makes it one of my favourite hidden places to visit in Sikkim.
Best Time to Visit Sikkim
The best time to visit Sikkim and explore all its beautiful places depends on what kind of experience you are looking for.
March to June is perfect for flowers, comfortable weather, and open mountain passes. Spring (March-April) is especially beautiful when rhododendrons are in full bloom across Yumthang Valley and the forested hillsides.
October to December is ideal for clear skies and stunning mountain views. The air is crisp, the snow starts falling at higher altitudes, and the Kanchenjunga looks absolutely sharp and clear.
January and February brings snow to mid-altitude areas like Gangtok itself, which is exciting but also means some roads to northern places to visit in Sikkim may be blocked.
July to September is the monsoon season. Landslides are common and roads can get blocked for days. I would suggest avoiding this time unless you are very flexible with your travel plans.

Practical Tips for Places to Visit in Sikkim
After three trips and lots of learning the hard way, here are my most honest tips for anyone planning to explore the places to visit in Sikkim:
Permits: Special Inner Line Permits are needed for North Sikkim, Nathula Pass, and Gurudongmar Lake. Carry multiple photocopies of your ID proof and passport photos everywhere you go in Sikkim.
Getting There: The nearest airport to most places to visit in Sikkim is Pakyong Airport near Gangtok, but most people fly into Bagdogra near Siliguri and then take a shared or private taxi. The drive takes about 3 to 4 hours.
Accommodation: Gangtok has hotels for every budget. Smaller towns like Lachen, Lachung, and Yuksom have basic but clean guesthouses. Book well in advance during peak season (April-May and October-November).
Food: The food in Sikkim is absolutely delicious. Do not miss momos, thukpa, gundruk, and a warm bowl of dal bhat on a cold evening. Every small roadside dhaba I ate at was honest and filling.
Altitude: For high-altitude places to visit in Sikkim like Gurudongmar and Nathula, please acclimatise properly. Spend at least one full day in Gangtok before going to higher elevation. Carry basic medicines like Diamox (after consulting a doctor), and stay well hydrated at all times.
My Most Memorable Moment in Sikkim
Out of all the many places to visit in Sikkim that I have explored over three trips, one moment stands above everything else. It was late evening at Gurudongmar Lake. All the other tourists had left. I was standing completely alone at the edge of that vast, still lake, the sky turning dark orange and purple, the mountains totally silent all around me. In that moment, I felt very small and very peaceful at exactly the same time. Sikkim has a way of doing that to you.
